Did you know that energy-saving light bulbs use up to four times less electricity to generate the same amount of light? They might seem more expensive than standard bulbs, but they last much longer. Try changing to energy saving bulbs in areas where lights are used alot, such as in the hallway, on the landing or in a child's bedroom.

Plant something local!

Encourage wildlife into your garden by planting native species. These are better suited to local conditions and don't need to be looked after as much as non-native plants. This website gives you information on which plants are local to you, just by typing in your postcode:

Switch it off!

Household appliances that are left on standby mode are responsible for producing one million tonnes of greenhouse gases every year. Switching off your TV, DVD and CD players when they are not in use will save you money, and help protect our environment.

Make a compost heap

You don't need much space to start composting your own garden and kitchen waste (but no meat please!). The compost that you produce can be used to improve soil fertility and your garden's biodiversity.
