GREEN HOME

Want to make your home greener - but not sure where to start?

There is a plethora of books, videos and other resources available on free loan from FEL's Resource Library Resource Library.

Our Librarian can also help you choose the most appropriate approach.

Sustainable Living

Lots of organisations advise on green living to get you started. Check the following...

Friends of the Earth Scotland
Greenpeace
Forward Scotland
Scottish Executive
Centre for Alternative Technology

...and take a look at our top tips

Recycling

It is now possible to recycle a large percentage of the consumables used in your home. Some sources of information are:

Clacks Council Recycling Services
Falkirk Waste Services
Stirling Council Recycling Services
Sort It
SEPA

Also make sure you check out your local Freecycle website, where you can find a new home for your unloved old sofa or see just the thing you were looking for - and all completely free!

And if you have a garden you can divert lots of kitchen waste from the landfill site by starting a compost heap.

Water

Take a look at the Waterwise website for advice on reducing your water consumption in the home and garden.

Energy

To find out all about how to save energy, and for details of grants to make your home more energy efficient, look at the Energy Saving Trust website.

Switching to a green tariff for electricity is a really good way to make a difference. Some suppliers also link a donation to an environmental charity to your bill, so you can make a double impact! The Green Electricity website lists all UK providers of green electricity, allowing you to compare tariffs and services at a glance.

Shopping

Living in a consumer society, it is often through the shopping we do that we can have the greatest influence.
Choosing Fair Trade products, buying locally-produced goods, buying organic goods, supporting small, local shops rather than doing all your shopping at the big chain stores - these are all ways to help make changes for the better.
FEL carries a wide range of guides, catalogues and magazines to help you make the best choices. Contact our librarian for more information. There are also many websites to point you in the right direction. Try:

Ethical Consumer
Green Guide
Fair Trade
Forth Valley Food Links

CAT
Green shop
Recycled products

...and remember to take your own bags with you when you go shopping!

Telephone and Internet

The Phone Co-op says it is the UK's only telecommunications provider run as a co-operative. They will also give a donation to a range of environmental charities when you pay your bill.

Money Matters

How you save and invest your money is just as important as how you spend it. Search for ethical investment on Friends of the Earth Scotland's website for detailed information about banks, building societies, mortgage lenders, insurance companies, pension providers etc, who will offer you ethical options for your money.

Breakdown Services

Consider signing up to the Environmental Transport Association for your breakdown cover. This organisation is committed to promoting greener transport solutions.
