Biodiversity Education and Action

Biodiversity has a key role in helping us to understand the importance of more sustainable living. FEL's Biodiversity Officer works with schools and community groups to help them to get this message across in an exciting and stimulating way. Regular family events are also held at the Smith Museum & Art Gallery in Stirling.

Workshops

We offer a unique range of biodiversity education packages for schools, working directly with teachers and pupils. We have developed a wide choice of biodiversity-focused workshops which are designed to involve all aspects of the curriculum. Workshops can be customised to suit individual needs, or you can click on the links to find out more about some of the themed workshops that have already been created.

Food Miles (Primary 4 - 7)

Using a basket of fresh food, the children learn how to identify the country of origin of food and then identify the origins of the food in the basket. Focusing on one item from the basket, the children re-construct the journey that food has taken from harvest to table. The steps are discussed in terms of energy use and pollution. The journey is then compared with the journey of food that is grown in Scotland and then with food grown at school or in the garden at home.

Spiders & Movement (Nursery)

I can run, jump, throw, swim and roll. Different spiders can do all these too! See some large images of spiders, play pretend moving like a spider, feel with your toes like a spider, play a spider rhyme game, and make up your own spider dance.
The Nettle Lesson (Primary 4 - 7)

Drama and caterpillars! The life-cycle of a butterfly, and survival techniques of the caterpillar experienced through story and role-play.

Woodland Child (Primary 4 - 7)
picture of children in a woodland walk

Imagine you are a child living long ago, in a village on the edge of a vast wood. Every day you have chores at home, in the fields, and with the animals. There are no schools. You do not know how to read and write. Instead, you know a great deal about the world around you, and how it helps you survive. Using task cards and tables, discover the breadth of materials available to our ancestors from the natural world around them.

Other workshops include:

  • Ephemeral art
  • Scent quest
  • Walls as habitats
  • Where do you get your energy from?
  • Minibeasts and habitats
  • Plants and us
  • Mr Sun's Restaurant
  • Lost letters
  • Battery sound activities
  • Games
  • Lungs of the world
  • Special cameras
